Having a pool in your backyard to beat the summer heat is almost a necessity, but are your summer monthly electric bills draining your bank account?  The answer is yes if you are not using an energy-efficient pool pump, which is why Florida lawmakers passed legislation to require pool owners to dump old power-wasting models for newer ones.  The statewide law, which goes into effect March 2012 states that when the old pump needs to be replaced the pool owner will have to upgrade to a new energy-efficient model.  This law applies to both residential pools and in-ground spas using pumps or motors of one horsepower or greater.

The new law that applies to commercial swimming pools and spas is a new regulation from the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.  Providing equal opportunity to people with disabilities is the fundamental principal of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  The requirements for newly constructed and existing pools and spas are that all commercial and municipal pools and spas have a means of entry and exit for people with disabilities.  Depending on the size of the pool some pools may require two accessible means of entry, smaller pools are only required to have one.  There are a limited number of exceptions to the requirements.  The date of compliance is March 15, 2012.  Tax credits and deductions may be available to those entities that need to comply.

So what is the proper equipment?

1. Variable speed pumps are now required by law on swimming pools that need a 1hp pump.Variable speed pumps cost pennies a day to operate so in our opinion every pool owner should choose this type of pump. Over the life of the pool you will save thousands of dollars vs. the old pump technology.

2. An in-floor cleaning and circulation system. You would not buy a car without A/C, likewise don’t have a pool built without a built-in cleaning and circulation system. This is the heart of the pool and over the years an in-floor cleaning and circulation system will more than pay for itself compared to hose cleaner repair and maintenance. Not to mention the hassle of taking it in and out of the pool.

3. A large capacity cartridge filter. Using a cartridge filter will save you thousands of gallons of water. If every pool in Florida had a cartridge filter we could save over a billion gallons of water annually.

4. For sanitation, use a combination of ozone and a chlorinator. The ozone will oxidize the contaminants and kill bacteria and viruses. Since ozone is only produced when the pool pump is on a residual of chlorine is needed, hence the addition of an in-line chlorinator.  Chlorine cannot be eliminated entirely from any pool but with an ozone system you can reduce chlorine by up to 70%.  This recommended combo will give you the healthiest and cleanest pool water.

4. Lastly, the swimming pool interor you choose should be able to handle some abuse and be forgiving, no one is perfect! Plaster is old school and does not have the longevity that an aggregate finish does.  Choosing one of the aggregate finishes that we offer will save you thousands of dollars over the life of the pool.

A: No- In fact with a salt water chlorinated pool, the salt in the pool is converted into chlorine. If your goal is to swim in a chlorine free pool this is not possible in a salt water chlorinated pool.

Q: Is a salt water chlorinated pool “maintenance free”?

A: Far from it- In fact, with a salt water chlorination system you still must be very diligent about properly maintaining your pool’s water chemistry.

Q: Is there any ongoing maintenance needed with the salt water chlorination system?

A: Yes- In order to ensure proper chlorine production, most manufacturers require that the salt system cell be manually removed and then rinsed in a diluted “acid bath” at least every 3 months.

Q: Can the salt level in the water harm materials in and around the pool?

A: Yes- Salt is a very corrosive material and there are many documented instances of deteriorating deck and coping materials in salt water chlorinated pools. Additionally, metals in and around the pool can be subject to corrosion. Even stainless steel is susceptible to corrosion at levels of 3500 ppm.

Q: Is an ozone system like Clear O3 maintenance free?

A: As with any pool water sanitation method it is important that proper water chemistry be maintained. Of great benefit is that unlike a salt water chlorination system which tends to drive the PH higher, an ozone system is PH neutral. The oxidation power of ozone allows for up to 70% reduction in the amount of chemicals necessary to maintain proper water chemistry.
